The majestic house in which Giovanni Verga spent most of his life is located in the heart of the historic center of Catania. As is well known, Verga was born in Catania on September 2, 1840, into a wealthy family. Considered the greatest exponent of Verismo, he began writing at a young age. Among his most important works we remember “Storia di una Capinera” (The Sparrow), “I Malavoglia” (The House by the Medlar Tree), “Rosso Malpelo,” “Vita dei campi” (Life in the Fields), and the “Novelle rusticane” (Rustic Stories). Today open to the public as a museum, the house is located on the second floor of a nineteenth-century bourgeois building and it was officially declared a national monument in 1949. What makes the apartment distinctive is undoubtedly its original furnishings. Inside, one can find the private study with the adjoining library made of walnut wood and consisting of 2600 unique volumes, the bedroom with portraits of ancestors, photographs taken by Verga himself, and many other objects that belonged to him.
